Benny... Thomas is a great technician but he's also got fantastic Feel to his playing. You cant but be impressed if you see him live, not just from his technical skills but hes also musical.

Sometimes video clips just dont do people justice and at other times they do. I hope they capture his essence on the new dvd and not just go for the "Circus" tricks which hes more than capable of doing.

Like Andy I just wished they left the "stick tricks" at home(more like in the closet ), there's no need to showcase that stuff on a video and it really sets a bad example for the people that look up to them(the young people mainly)...

But still a sick player indeed!

I also read Carl Fisher has just released 2 Akira Jimbo DVD's, that's pretty great news too!

I totally disagree! Lang grooves and plays like a madman on the performance track. The stick twirls is his thing. Donati does it, Blackwell does it...let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater here. These guys, along with Lang in particular, are super dedicated and super skilled. They simply blow doors off just about any major player...and where does that leave us?

I have NO problem standing outside myself and appreciating the insane work it takes to achieve such skill levels. If we as drummers don't then who will? We should know what it take to acheive such levels of competence.

My dad out of the blue in high school said he would have been a professional tennis player if he lived his life over. I commented how I had never seen my dad play tennis or even watch tennis on TV. He replied, "If I knew I could make that kind of money hitting a little ball over a net, I would be a professional tennis player." In other words, hitting a little ball was no big deal...forget that Conners, Agassi, Sampres dedicated their entire lives to be the best.

I heard a sports talk radio idiot host today say Lance Armstrong wasn't an athlete and that he could win at least one stage in the Tour De France. This is beyond sad. I am a cyclist and Armstrong is a super human. It is INSANE what he can achieve. I'm in awe of it. To diminish him and say as a sport talk radio host that he could go out today and win a stage at will is not rational. This guy needs an arse whooping to sober up here.

I love it all--freaky talent, Porcaro grooves, Vinnie, Donati, Bonham, Phillips--speaking of a guy who can lay down chops, feel, taste, and pazzazz, Ol' Simon's got it all!

WOW That guy is incredible!! The first time I've seen him and I'm amazed. I agree that sometimes you see a player who can be construde as displaying astounding technique without necessarily being musical, but to me just watching such a ridiculous display of chops like those clips show, brought a smile to my face! His playing is really clean and well articulated. I don't think I've seen many drummers that can do all that.
Having said that, I would also say that it's very 'showy' and maybe deliberately so. It's almost as if he's showing us examples of what's possible if you practice 24 hours a day. Like a power lifter that can lift a ridiculous weight, great but what's the point?!. Despite how impressed I am with his technical abilities, I have to say that the music in the track he played along to was bloody horrible.
Anyone got any information on him? Who does he play with?

I cannot actually say that I have seen any short small video clip do a Great player FULL justice.
So I got to give Lang credit for that and the fact that the video is probaly(and obviously) geared to in part,on distinct technical exercises
and tips and part of that is the showier stuff going on. The video in large part is probaly not about displaying tremendous restraint in a distinct band situation(just laying back and not doing much)or how to groove in a certain style. He did not need to make a video to say "hey sometimes you need to lay back and just play simple and stay out of the way" that is not his focus here I would venture to guess. I would bet the video has different aspects to it with the technical issues being the main concern.

Thomas along with guys like Virgil and a few others have put out tapes to show how to build up your physical foundation and that is fine and neccessary. Thomas along with others known for their technique can surely play for the music and enhance the situation they are in, because they have and are doing it, they are just known MORE for their crazy physical abilities but hey what they do is AWESOME and very cool in it's own right, and they sleep easy at night because THEY KNOW they got the whole package going.

That being said I was not overly impressed(or I should say newly impressed) with the little I saw or have seen in the past, in just a purely technical standpoint. It was Great and fantastic for sure but for something comparable, I will take what Virgil is doing off of his Power Drumming video(his last few solo performances) especially the 3 minute double stroke performance clip with the solo over the top, it is more creative and technically demanding and is done flawlessly at the same time. And what is nuts is the fact that the tape is almost 13 years old. Just a little plug there I guess ( I am sure there is more insanity going on Lang's video other than the little shown) but seriously Thomas, Virgil and Marco and others got insane technique and chops and can be very musical and restrained when need be. What they are doing is inspiring to many, me included.

Regards Kirk

dazz....theres agood interview with thomas in the MD Nov2002 issue. there also an interview with him in the archives section on mike dolbears site Link here!

I saw thomas at the meinl clinic with rabb and minemman in northampton. INCREDIBLE would be an understatement. He's got feel though, and thats what impressed me.... as most clinics you come away with seeing loads of tricks, but was it musical.
suprised you havent heard of thomas as he taught at the old MI in wapping by the bass centre.

Bozzio, I bought the first akira dvd wasabi and the four tunes he plays on there are great. On the Instructional/tuitional side i was highly dissapointed.
